Kirk Herbstreit: ESPN Is Trying to Take College GameDay on the Road

Kirk Herbstreit had a spot with 3HL on 104.5 The Zone in Nashville today, and he dropped a really hopeful nugget about the possibility of ESPN taking College GameDay on campus for football season. Listen around the 28:30 mark:

“I was on a call for this morning,” Herbstreit said. “Everything is just tentative, but we really are doing everything we can — or at least our bosses are — to try to give the fans the closest thing that we can give them to what you’d expect from GameDay — which means trying to put it on the road. I don’t think they’re gonna have fans at GameDay, obviously. I think we’re gonna try to have some fun — you see the NBA, some of the virtual stuff. We’re talking about Clemson and Florida State, maybe have fans from those schools on monitors going crazy cheering on their team.”

He said they are still trying to make it feel like a “tailgate” and that he’s proud they’re not taking the easy way out of doing a remote show from their respective homes.

This is awesome news if they can pull it off — it’s at least great to see that they’re being ambitious and I’m sure there are contingency plans if it doesn’t work.

(Here’s the obligatory part of this story where we note that the Big Ten and Pac-12 canceled their seasons too early if ESPN is still talking about the possibility of having College GameDay on campus.)
