Ottawa and the provinces made $186 million from numerous taxes on cannabis from final October by the tip of March, numbers launched Wednesday present.
The provinces took the lion’s share of that cash, with $132 million in mixed gross sales tax and excise tax income; the federal treasury took in $55 million.
Governments face a dilemma taxing cannabis, says Brock College enterprise professor Michael Armstrong.
“It’s a tradeoff — the extra you improve taxes the extra income you get, however that will increase costs and makes you much less aggressive with the black market.”
